Self-Service Bag Drop to Frankfurt Airport

Updated: Jan 17, 2022

BB Computerteknikk AS and local partner Profluss GmbH won contract for self-service bag drop prototype to Fraport AG. Mechanical design, engineering and prototypes done by NewTracks.

BB Computerteknikk AS has long traditions in delivering self-service bag drop systems, the Bagomat®, but a new generation developed for Fraport. The new version has passport scanning and face recognition, and also the portable FloorAssistant – a hand-held device with all desk functions, so the airport personal can help the passengers in need of assistance.

The system is a so-called retrofit, which means it is installed in an existing desk and can be used both as a traditional manually check-in desk, or as a self-service bag drop. The two prototypes (one in Terminal 1 and one in Terminal 2) will be tested for 12 months and evaluated before installation of further system.

Design

One of the challenges for the design was that all service operations should be done from the front side. This meant designing the whole unit as a drawer with printers and scanners to be slided open for replacing printer paper. Also, the space was quite limited for all the electronics inside.

Prototype for the electric unit was made by NewTracks:
